Mobile-Tensaw River Delta Trips

The Mobile-Tensaw River Delta offers the unparalleled beauty of a southern hardwood bottomland swamp. Much of this 150,000-acre swamp is now protected as Coastal Land Trust or Alabama State Forever Wild property. Access to the Delta is only 10 minutes away, and some of the finest flat water paddling in the swamps and marshes is along the bayous closest to the farm. There are several archeological and historical sites along the eastern shore of the Delta, all within close proximity. Guided day trips visit some of these sites, and overnight or extended trips provide opportunities for camping, fishing and serious exploration in the swamp.

Blackwater River Trips

There are numerous blackwater streams and rivers within a short distance; several river access points are less than an hour away. Coastal blackwater streams typically originate in hardwood swamps where the tannin from trees in these bottomlands stains the water black, resembling tea. The streams then meander through piney woods and along sandy beaches for miles before flowing into the Gulf of Mexico. These moving water rivers are generally appropriate for beginners, and camping opportunities abound. River trips are offered on the following streams: Styx River, Perdido River, Little River, Majors Creek, Escatawpa River, Red Creek, MS., and Black Creek, MS. Numerous other streams within a few hours drive offer endless possibilities, including multiple day wilderness float trips.

Coastal Trips

Mobile Bay, Weeks Bay, and the Gulf of Mexico offer extensive opportunities for saltwater paddling. There are several Federal or state preserved lands in the area including: Weeks Bay, Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge, portions of Mobile Bay, Gulf Islands National Seashore with the Horn Island Wilderness Area, Grand Bay Pine Savannah, and the Whooping Crane National Wildlife Refuge. The coastal kayak opportunities are endless; with inshore day trips and offshore paddling trips available. It is even possible to island hop from Florida to Texas in the Gulf.
